The Assignment

Manulife Tower is a Grade A office tower managed by a global facilities management team. Every Chinese New Year, they will decorate to add festivities to the space. We were tasked to help with the graphics and environmental design of the festival.

“We’d like a display structure like the shopping malls”

While the decorations in previous years were well and without hiccups, we found that the shopping malls have progressed to use display structure. The cherry blossom tree that we have been getting was pretty much getting too boring. With the investments going into the display, we wanted something unique and eye-catching. This is important for us as we manage a Grade A tower and our only way to differentiate our service to our tenants – bringing in together quality decorations for their office.

The Solution

Step #1: Analyse the crowd and space

The team analysed the previous decorations and compared against the architecture in Manulife Tower

The verdict:

  • The angled corner faces a junction
  • The previous decorations came without illumination strategy
  • Decorations was more focused on interior looks

Step #2: Zero in on current displays in shopping malls

With the opportunity of a junction facing display window, the team researched on the different display structures. An important element was the cherry blossom tree, we had to find a way to integrate into the display.

Step #3: Create visually pleasing graphics that resonates

Using the insights from space features and general trends, the team created customised display that shows off itself right at the junction

  • An upright gold coin with a huge auspicious word
  • A naturally styled cherry blossom tree
  • Illumination plan that keep the set up lit during the night

The Deliverables

At the end of the project, Manulife Tower got:

  • Modern and unique display that leverages on the angled window
  • Pre-launch visualisation for key touch point to be sure how it looks before production
  • Colourful decals with auspicious elements that is corporate looking
  • Managed props and prints fabrication and installation service of the festive display.
